One Discovery Square: Fostering Innovation & Connection Between Mayo Clinic & Industry Peers

Client: Mortenson

Date Range: 2019-2023

Summary: The Musicant Group worked with Mortenson to center Discovery Square as an industry-leading place for innovation and collaboration, and to create a fertile meeting ground for Mayo Clinic and non-Mayo employees to connect. Through regular activities, topical learning lunches and other engagements, we made the return-to-work experience more appealing as tenant employees transitioned out of their remote work routines. These efforts, at the largest building of Destination Medical Center, contributed momentum to the expansion of the campus to develop their next building: Two Discovery Square.

Project Goals & Strategy

Our goal was to help Mortenson center Discovery Square as an industry-leading place for innovation and collaboration, in particular, connecting Mayo Clinic employees with others working in related fields.

Our strategy involved producing regular activations - both virtually and in the campus common area - to allow tenant offices and students to intermingle, eat, and learn together; communicating through multiple platforms to build awareness about how to engage; and connecting to the greater Rochester community through event partnerships.

What we did

  • Produced a regular rotation of activations, including lunchtime live music, topical “lunch and learn” gatherings, featuring industry talks and lectures in the common-area, and more.

  • Coordinated rotating chalkboard prompts for tenants to engage with.

  • Facilitated wellness days, and “acts of care” for tenants to give back to the greater community.

  • Developed brand awareness through social media and ongoing newsletter communications

Outcomes & Benefits

  • Through our latest evaluations, we learned that 80% of tenants found our programming had a positive impact on their interest in being present in space and coming into the office.

  • Our community building at One Discovery Square contributed momentum to the expansion of Destination Medical Center to develop their next building: Two Discovery Square.
